And Day 10 is: "a favorite song that is often played at Indian weddings."
Unfortunately, I've never actually been to an Indian wedding, so was at a bit of a loss for this one. However, a bit of a Google search turned up a list of Top Indian Wedding Songs, and I decided to choose from that.
Except, it was a really tough choice. I actually really like most of the songs on that list, so it was hard to pick just one. In the end, I decided on this:
Day 9 of the challenge is to post your favorite song from a YashRaj film. I'm not a huge fan of YashRaj's films in general, but one of the great exceptions is Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, a film I love to bits, most likely because it takes the typical YashRaj filmi tropes and turns them on their heads. In fact, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom would probably very likely make any list of favorite films I might write up -- and it's most definitely a film I would adore to see in a cinema.
It's hard to pick just one song from the wonderful Shankar-Eshaan-Loy soundtrack, but one song in particular is another one of those clips I go to if I need a pick-me-up:
Now that I think about it, "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom" also suits one of the days in the challenge that I skipped, Day 7, which was "a song you enjoy dancing to." "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom" never fails to get me up off my chair. And for that reason, it probably also could serve for Day 22, "a song you know the whole routine and choreography to." Well, maybe not all of it, but enough to dance along with the video.
And that's given me an idea, too, for a future post, which is one of the happy side-effects I was hoping for from this challenge!
Day 8 is"a favorite item number song". Inspired by Dolce (of Dolce and Namak Talk Indian Movies) to think a little outside the box and move beyond Munni (which I do actually like a lot), I reached back into Casa Favorite Vishal Bhardwaj's filmography to choose this, "Beedi" from Omkara:
I actually can't help wondering if I like Munni so much because it reminds me of "Beedi". Hum. Food for thought.
Essentially, when I go out for a walk, I listen to podcasts. And my filmi music is for the gym, where I like a good peppy tune to get me moving. One of the most recent songs I added to my gym playlist is "Switty Tera Pyaar" from Delhi Belly:
Okay. Song Three is: "a song you like driving to."
Confession: I don't listen to filmi music much, except at the gym, hence my difficulty at pulling some of these songs out of my memory bank. And when I drive (and I do, alas, cos I live in a place with lousy public transport), I like to listen to classic rock and roll. I suspect this is because when I first learned to drive, what I listened to was rock and roll.
Another confession: I tend not to like Hindi film rock music. I don't know why, but in the vast majority of cases, it doesn't work for me. There's one exception, and that's the music for the film Paanch. In case you don't know Paanch, that's Anurag Kashyap's unreleased first film. It is flawed, but it is a compelling watch. My dream is that one day TIFF will do a retrospective of Kashyap's films at the Bell Lightbox, and they'll bring Paanch in, with subtitiles, and we'll be able to see it in its full glory on a cinema screen. It features one of Kay Kay Menon's most brilliant performances, and, since it's the story of a struggling rock band, a great rock score composed by Vishal Bhardwaj (with lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala).
So, the song I would listen to while driving is "Main Khuda" from Paanch, sung by KK:
Number 2 on the challenge is "a song that makes you sad."
"I'm happy. I'm happy," says Om as he talks to the billboard of his beloved Shanti, but this song betrays him, showing us his broken heart. My heart always breaks along with him, and I adore this picturisation of "Jag Soona Soona Lage", it's just a gem of a thing:
Okay, so I know it's supposed to be the 30 DAY Bollywood Soundtrack Challenge, but I'm not sure I can manage 30 days in a row; plus, I'm jumping in somewhere in the middle of where everyone else who's doing this is. But I figured I'd give it a bit of a shot, though I've hesitated at least twice now, because music is my weak spot. Let's see if I can brush up a bit and work on that, eh?
So, Number 1: A Song That Makes You Happy:
Well, perhaps "happy" isn't the right word, but "Ui Amma Ui Amma Kya Karata Hai" from David Dhawan's 1994 film Raja Babu is one of those songs on my "pick-me-up" list. Maybe it's Govinda, maybe it's Lolo, maybe it's both of them together, but it cheers me up when I'm feeling a bit blue.
