So, the official trailer for Anurag Basu's Barfi! is out:
And I have to say, it gave me such a hit of "inspired by Jean-Pierre Jeunet":
From the quirky charm, the almost retro-but-timeless quality, Yann Tiersen's score, the cinematography (especially the reds and greens so associated with Jeunet's films), to the seemingly effortless quality about it all.
And I totally mean that in a good way -- as if Basu and his team were able to take a film inspiration and turn it into something of their own. And not only that -- something that I am suddenly very keen to see.
The Barfi! trailer has had me break my "see the trailer once, or more only if it turns up in a cinema" rule. I've watched it four times now, because each time it left me with a question I wanted to go back and see if I could answer, partly about whether I was really feeling the Jeunet connection (I don't think I'm wrong here), partly wanting to see little things I thought I'd missed the previous time I watched it.
I can't remember the last time a trailer appealed to me so much, or made me want to see the film as much as I do this one. I only hope the Barfi! promotions won't wear out their welcome or ruin my desire to see the film in September.
Oh, yeah, you're not wrong. That has - seemingly in a good way, from what the trailer shows - Jeunet's influence suffused throughout. If Barfi! is even half as good as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain was, it will be a great film.
